The Department of Pathology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, invites applications for Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs. The position is expected to be filled at the Professor level, though outstanding candidates at an earlier career stage may be considered at the Associate Professor level if they have demonstrated substantial leadership experience and potential.
Reporting to the Chair of Pathology, the Vice Chair will lead the department’s clinical services across Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. This role is designed for a leader who will work closely with the Chair, advising and assisting in both strategy and execution. The successful candidate will be an established academic pathologist with clinical expertise in one or more subspecialties of Anatomic or Clinical Pathology. Participation in clinical service is expected, including call coverage as appropriate; however, the primary selection criterion will be a strong record of leadership in an academic health system.
The medical directors of the department’s clinical divisions will report to the Vice Chair, who will provide oversight of clinical operations and mentorship of clinical faculty. This role requires working beyond the department, collaborating with division chiefs and leaders across the health system. Responsibilities also include advancing the department’s educational and research missions through participation in GME and UME, curriculum development, scholarly activity, and collaborative clinical research.
UTMB Pathology has been an early adopter of technological innovation and has helped lead institutional efforts in AI. The department has been fully digital in surgical pathology since 2023 and has validated and deployed artificial intelligence tools in clinical practice. The Vice Chair will play a central role in building on this momentum and positioning the department for continued growth and national leadership. This position is particularly well suited for a leader with an innovative mindset and experience or interest in digital pathology, informatics, AI, and new models of diagnostic practice.

Board certification in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology, eligibility for Texas medical licensure, and authorization to work in the United States are essential.
